Wild Turkeys - Introduction and History

Soon after wild turkeys were reintroduced into their original habitat, their range extended over as much as 65% of the US territory. In the old days, Indian tribes hunted and domesticated wild turkeys. In the 16th century, the Spanish brought the bird to Europe.

Wild turkeys are not migratory birds. They live in mature woods, predominantly in oak tree forests, with 10 to 25% of clear space. Turkeys may move from one habitat to another, as may be required by seasonal changes. They have also been spotted in miry bottomlands, in the uplands and pine woods. Wild turkeys dwell in places with ample vegetation. They feed on fruit, nuts, seeds, bulbs, tubers and roots. The birds also prefer insects, lizards and worms.
