Females and the young are not very bright, compared to males. Hens build their nests on the ground and hatch the eggs for about 6 weeks, so both the hens and the nest should be camouflaged in the grass. The hens, the chicks and the eggs come in various shades of reddish brown and gray. Adult males don’t have to hide from predators, because they are large and strong enough to defend themselves. This species is the largest in its habitat, with males measuring up to 36 inches high. These birds are very adaptable; they inhabit the vast territory from Canada to Mexico.
