Successful conservation program and introducing these birds to Europe and other parts of the world helped the species survive. The current population of these birds is over 7 million individuals. They are a common game species in many parts of the USA, Canada and Mexico. Only some populations of these birds migrate in winter; the majority of birds stay in their summer residents.

Domesticated birds of this breed are large compared to their untamed relatives. They can be found in South and North America. The average lifespan of the breed is about 10 years. The plumage of these birds is brown or black, with green, red, blue and gold iridescence. Hens are smaller than males. The dull coloring of females and chicks helps them camouflage in the grass. Young males grow adult feathers at the age of 2 years. These birds are polygamous; males don’t participate in raising the young.
