Male birds of this species during the breeding season are a wonderful sight, but it’s difficult to see them in their natural habitats. When strutting, they try to seem bigger, with their feathers erect, their tail fanned out, and their wings lowered. They also attempt to attract females by "gobbling." Their calls are heard about a mile away. Adult males have large home ranges and mate with 3-5 females. Females build the nests in the tall grass and care for the chicks alone. These birds are slow to mature; they stay with the mother for 4-10 months. The average age of reproductive maturity is 10 months, but young males face difficulties when finding a home range to attract females.
