Wild Turkey Bird
A wild turkey bird can be obtained from a breeder, but don't rely on a photo when choosing a bird for you.
Breeding these birds is not very difficult, as these prolific breeders are not picky and bond with any mate. One adult male can breed with five or more females during the breeding season. Males and females of this species look much different; it’s easy to determine the sex of a bird at the early age. Being very sociable, these birds should not be kept alone to be happy. Company and human attention are very important for the well being of these pets. They cannot live alone and it is better to keep a whole harem.

Wild Turkey Bird -
breeder, photo
There are 6 subspecies of these birds, and 4 subspecies are known only by fossils. Only a specialist can distinguish them, as they look much alike and differ in feather tones and distribution. All subspecies are the largest in their habitats. Adult males may weigh up to 30 pounds. In southern Mississippi, the red and smoky-gray color varieties of these birds occur. They are not partially domestic and breed with birds with other coloration. The red phase is characterized by rusty, reddish color on most body feathers; the smoky-gray birds are whitish grayish in color on parts or most of the body.
