Males of these birds are polygamous, having large home ranges that include the territories of five or more females. Females are usually monogamous. The breeding season begins in March or April when the birds are still in their winter areas. Breeding behavior of these birds is called strutting. Only high-ranking males can strut. When courting, males spread out their tails and drag their wings. The head and neck of the males can change in color from red to white depending on the bird’s mood.
