There exist 6 widely spread subspecies of these large birds, which differ slightly in distribution and size. 4 subspecies are extinct and are known only by fossils. These creatures were unknown to Europeans until the Spanish conquistadors came to South America and found them as farm birds of the Aztecs. Those creatures were much smaller than modern domestic varieties, but they were an important source of protein for many people. In Native American mythology, there exist a lot of legends and fairy tales about these creatures. Aztec nobility wore clothes decorated with feathers of these birds.
