On The Trail Of The Wild Turkey -
photo, breeder
These birds usually nest in areas a well-developed under story that provides shelter from predators and human disturbance. Less than half of all nesting attempts are successful, because the nest is situated on the ground and the incubating period is very long. Many predators from foxes and coyotes to snakes feed on eggs when the hen is gone for grazing. If the nest is destroyed, some hens breed again and make a second clutch. Re-nesting hens lay fewer eggs, as they less much time for raising the young. During their first 2 weeks of life, chicks are very vulnerable, as they are unable to fly and have to roost under the hen on the ground.
