It’s native to North America, but there is a confusion over its origin because of the species’ common name. Unlike their domestic counterparts, these birds are very agile. They can reach a speed of 80 km per hour, but are able to fly no more than 400 meters. These birds are usually found in woods, but for mating they choose open areas. Hens build their nests on the ground at the base of a tree or in tall grass. These birds are active only in the daytime. They roost in the trees.

It is easy to tell the difference between an adult male and a juvenile male. Their tails are quite different as all tail feathers of adult males are of the same length. The feathers in the center of the tail are usually longer than the rest of the feathers in the tail. These creatures are very often hunted and in the early 1930s this grand game bird was on the verge of extinction. But today, thanks to hunters and wildlife restoration programs, the bird is abundant and thriving in its homeland. The scientific name of the species is Meleagris gallopavo.
