These birds are native to the South and North America. Nowadays, they inhabit a vast territory throughout the eastern USA from southern Canada to northern Mexico and east to Arizona. Besides, they are introduced to other parts of the world. In some areas, they are numerous and are considered common game birds; and in others they are protected by law. Sexual dimorphism is characteristic of this species. While males are large and brightly-colored with a fan-shaped tail, iridescent feathers, a red wattle, a beard and spurs, females are small, dark-feathered and have neither beard nor spurs.
