Smoked Wild Turkey

By day, these birds can be seen grazing in fields and woodlands; they spend the night in trees. Females make nests on the ground and hatch the eggs for 25 to 30 days. Males don’t take part in hatching and raising the young. When the hen leaves the nest to graze, it may fall a prey to a lot of predators. Various mammals, birds and snakes feed on eggs and chicks of these birds, but it doesn’t influence their population much. High reproductive range and the ability of hens to make another clutch compensate the loss. This species is a very important link in the food chains of its habitat. Adult birds are large enough to defend themselves; they have almost no predators except humans.
