These creatures have reddish orange legs and there are four toes on each foot. There are large spurs on the backs of the male’s lower legs. These spurs are pointed, bony spikes and are used for defense and to establish dominance. You can usually tell the difference between an adult male and a juvenile male (a jake) bird by looking at its tail: all tail feathers of adult males are of the same length. The feathers forming the center of a jake's tail are usually longer than the rest of the feathers in the tail.

These birds prefer woods for nesting and feeding, but they choose open areas for matin. Hens build their nests at the base of a tree or in tall grass. These birds roost in the trees and are active only in the daytime. The species is native to North America, but its common name creates a confusion over its origin. Unlike their domestic counterparts, these birds are not very large, but muscular and very agile. They are able to reach a speed of 80 km per hour, but can fly no more than 400 meters.
