These birds are the largest in their order. Breeders have created new subspecies and hybrids for farming purposes. As a rule, birds of this breed are very brightly colored, with long tail, large beak and a red wattle on the neck. Some species of these birds are kept as pets; they are quiet and dignified. These birds are not for everybody, as they demand much room in the yard and special food. They require a lot of attention and love; only in this case they stay fit and healthy.

These birds can be found throughout the eastern United States from extreme southern Canada south to northern Mexico. The numbers of these birds in their natural habitats should be controlled, because in some areas, these birds got used to human encounters and cause much problem. They cross the streets and enter buildings when seaching for a place to make a nest. This bird can be officially hunted in South Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma and Massachusetts. There are 6 subspecies of these birds: Eastern or Forest, Osceola or Florida, Rio Grande, Merriam's, Gould's, and South Mexican. Domestic species are much larger than their ancestors.
