The Eastern subspecies inhabits the entire eastern half of the United States; it’s the most numerous subspecies. The Rio Grande birds inhabit the area through Texas to Oklahoma and Kansas; they are second in population. The Osceola or Florida subspecies is native to the Florida peninsula. The Merriam's subspecies is found in the Rocky Mountains. The Gould's birds are native to central Mexico. The South Mexican subspecies is the least numerous nowadays, but long ago it gave rise to the domesticated variety of these birds.

In some areas, these birds are very numerous and their overpopulation causes many problems. Their feral colonies live in the suburbs or even in the parks.
