This species has dark feathers with bright iridescence. The bill is brown; the legs and feet are bare. Adults have dark brown eyes; chicks’ eyes are gray. There are six color varieties of these birds, but they are difficult to distinguish for a non-specialist. Some aviculturists create new colors in this species, but most farmers raise these birds for meat. These birds grow very large; they don’t need special conditions and are easy to keep and breed.

Wild Turkey Golf Club -
picture, breeders
These birds are wary and difficult to spot in their natural habitats. Their keen eyesight and hearing allow them avoid encounters with humans. Although, gobbling males during the breeding season can be heard a mile away. They utter loud calls to attract females and repel competing males. A strutting male is a wonderful sight. Sometimes, several males gather together to attract more females. Hens yelp to let males know their location. These exotic-looking birds use a number of vocalizations and physical displays to communicate. At least 15 different vocalizations of these birds are recognized. Females communicate with chicks by "clucks," "putts," "purrs," "yelps," "cutts," "cackles," and "kee-kees."
