There are 6 subspecies of these birds, but only a specialist can distinguish them, because they look much alike. All of them are brown or black with iridescent feathers in the tail and wings. The red and smoky-gray phases can be seen in southern Mississippi. Contrary to a common belief, such birds are not part domestic. Melanistic (totally black) and albino birds are very rare in this species.

These creatures are very popular both as farm birds and ornamental animals in America and Europe. Their large size and tasty meat make them an important source of protein; and their quiet nature and exotic looks make them popular as pets or as ornamental animals in parks. They don’t need any special care and are able to feed themselves the year round. These birds can be bought and kept even by a beginner. Being very adaptable, these creatures are easy to keep in captivity, but wild-caught birds should live in their natural habitat. If you find an orphaned baby, contact your local wildlife rehabilitation personnel or the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council. If there is no good alternative, you can take it with you and hand-raise. You should release the adult bird into the place where you’ve found it.
