The average weight of the adult male is 18 lbs and the adult female is 8 lbs. The largest male reported weighted 38 lbs. These birds are smaller than domestic species selectively bred for their meat and eggs. The ancestors of domestic birds are native to North and South America; they were hunted throughout the history and helped many people survive. They have a small head, long legs, and a dark-brown to black body. Males have spurs on the legs, a beard, a red throat, wattles and fleshy growths (carbuncles.) Males are much brighter than females. Males have a long, dark, fan-shaped tail and glossy wings with bronze, red, gold, green, or blue iridescence; females come in shades of gray and brown. These birds have four toes.
