Males of this species have brown or black feathers, bold face, and a long snood that turns bright red when the bird is excited. Females and the young are not very bright, having various shades of reddish brown and gray in their plumage. This species is the largest in its habitat, measuring up to 36 inches from the bill to the tail. They inhabit the vast territory from Canada to Mexico. Some subspecies migrate great distances to South Mexico.

Recipe For Wild Turkey -
photo, photos
These birds are a common game species throughout America. They can be hunted with a license in most parts of their range to control their populations. The main threat for adult birds of this species is poaching and habitat loss. Adults are large and strong enough to defend themselves from most predators, but young chicks that are unable to fly and nests that are build on the ground are very vulnerable to predation. A lot of mammals, snakes and birds feed on chicks and eggs of these birds. The chicks’ mortality generally ranges from 70 to 80 percent or higher during their first weeks of life. More than half of the nests are destroyed by predators. The high reproductive rate of the species allows these birds survive.
