These birds are usually found in woods or in tall grass. They feed in the morning and in the afternoon. During the breding season, they prefer areas near woods and brush that provide visibility. Their excellent eyesight alows to spot danger and escape from the predators and hunters. Although males of these birds are very bright-colored, females are dull and pale, which makes them almost invisible when they sit in the nest in tall grass or at the base of a tree. Some birds of this species migrate and mate in their winter areas; others are the resindents of the same area, depending on food availability.
