Rio Grande Wild Turkey

These birds are polygamous. Mating flocks consist of 2 or 3 adult males and 5 - 15 hens. The amount of hens varies depending on the hen population in the area and the number of other dominant males. A flock has the only dominant male who does all of the mating and 1 or 2 subdominant birds who fight off other gobblers. After several years, they throw the dominant male down or leave the flock searching for a separate home range. Young and weak males cannot breed, but all females can find a male for breeding. After the breeding season, males roam over their territory and search for the hens that are unsuccessful in nesting or those that lost their nest and breed again.

Rio Grande Wild Turkey -
photo, picture
There are 6 subspecies of these birds; some subspecies are already extinct. These birds are found only in the western hemisphere and are native to South and Central America. In the USA, you can see all 6 subspecies. Some of them are introduced to other countries. Domestic birds are not as agile as their counterparts living in woods. The favorite habitat for all birds of this species is areas that provide grass and bushes for shelter and food. They are not found at seashores and grasslands, unless migrating.
