The ancestors of domestic birds are native to North and South America. They are smaller than domestic species bred for meat and eggs. They have a small, featherless, bluish head; long reddish-orange to grayish-blue legs; and a dark-brown to black body. Males have spurs, a beard, a red throat, wattles and fleshy growths called carbuncles. These birds have four toes. Feather coloration of males is much brighter than that of females. Males have a long, dark, fan-shaped tail and glossy bronze wings with red, gold, green, or blue iridescence; females come in shades of gray and brown. The average weight of the adult male is 8.2 kg and the adult female is 3.2 kg. The largest male reported weighted 17 kg.
