Native Americans frequently ascribed cowardice and stupidity to wild turkeys. For fear of transitioning these not too enviable qualities to man, they preferred not to hunt them. Today the wild turkey is a perfect target for hunters. Hunting takes place during mating periods, when distant gobbling of males makes them easy to locate.
In the beginning of the 20th century, the overall number of wild turkeys started plunging at a threatening rate, and by the middle of the century, there were only 30,000 wild turkeys left in the USA. Now, due to efforts by conservationists, the population has increased, reaching 4 million birds.
Wild Turkeys - National Wild Turkey Federation
In 1973 in Fredericksburg, Va., the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded. It is a non-profit organization, which was supposed to provide education to future wild turkey hunters in order to preserve national hunting heritage and to protect the wild turkey from excessive killing. Nowadays the organization has affiliates in every state and in Canada.
The NWTF has substantially contributed to reintroduction and conservation of the wild turkey. It also takes part in the formation of national hunting legislation, which should provide reasonable opportunities for further maintaining of old hunting traditions.

Wild Turkeys - Sport Hunting
Turkey Hunting is an art. Many believe, that turkeys are clumsy and slow, which is not true at all. Wild turkeys can escape hunters pretty skillfully. A true hunter experiences a lofty feeling of satisfaction as he or she participates in the improvement of the turkey's natural habitat. Management of the land will inevitably add to the well-being of the bird and contribute to the preservation of the art of wild turkey hunting.
Hunting season begins at the same time as the mating period. Dawn is the most convenient time for stalking of a turkey. The area should not be crowded with hunters. In the place where a gobbler has been spotted there should be no more than one or two hunters. Hunters take only male wild turkeys.
