Wild Turkeys - Site Map
Wild turkeys currently belong to the few animal species that are not in jeopardy of extinction. However, at the turn of the 20th century, over hunting and deforestation resulted in drastic decrease in wild turkey population. The situation persisted until the mid-twentieth century.
Wild turkeys are cousins of well known domestic turkeys. Over the period of domestication, they have become very different. Hen raised turkeys have grown in size and lost the ability to fly.
Wild Turkeys belong to the Phasainidae family, along with partridges, grouse and quail. The scientific name of the wild turkey is Meleagris gallopavo. From beak to tail tip, males measure about 45 inches; females measure 36 inches.
Native Americans frequently ascribed cowardice and stupidity to wild turkeys. For fear of transitioning these not too enviable qualities to man, they preferred not to hunt them.
